Need for Blood Donation
a.
Every year India requires about 4 Crore units of blood, out of which only a meager 40 Lakh units of blood are available
b.
Every two seconds someone needs blood
c.
More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day
d.
A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year
e.
The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints
f.
The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O
g.
Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives
h.
More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment
i.
A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood
Blood Donation - Before and After
a. Get a good night's sleep
b. Eat a healthy meal before your donation
c. Drink lots of water and fluids before the donation
d. Have a good meal at least 3 hours before donating blood
e. Accept the snacks offered to you after the donation, it is vital that you have them
f. You are recommended to have a good meal later
g. Avoid smoking on the day before donating
h. You can smoke 3 hours after donation
i. You will not be eligible to donate blood if you have consumed alcohol 48 hours before donation
j. Drink plenty of fluids over the next 24-48 hours to replenish any fluids you lost during donation
k. Avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for about five hours after donation
l. If you feel light headed, lie down, preferably with feet elevated, until the feeling passes
m. In rare cases when bleeding occurs after removing the bandage, apply pressure to the site and raise your arm for 3-5 minutes
n. If bleeding or bruising occurs under the skin, apply a cold pack to the area periodically during the first 24 hours
o. Enjoy the good feeling that comes with knowing that you may have saved as many as three lives
